If you think it might be time to repair or replace your roof, then there are a few warning signs that you can look for before contacting a contractor. As always, we’re here to help, so contact us if you have any questions or want to schedule an estimate.
There are a few warning signs that you’ll be able to see from inside the house. This is going to require climbing into the attic, so grab your best and brightest flashlight and head upstairs. Here are a few things you should be looking for:
Light shining in from the outside – If there are any noticeable permeations of light in your attic, it means that moisture could be getting through as well, especially in our damp climate. This should be addressed immediately and may not necessarily be a sign that you need a new roof, but rather need some repairs.
Water Damage – The roof should’ve been inspected for water damage when you moved in, so if you notice water damage in new areas, it could be a sign of leaks and it’s crucial to patch those leaks before more damage is caused.
Dark areas – Dark areas on your roof tend to be a precursor for mold. If you notice any mold, dark spots or trails, it’s time to call us.
Sagging spots – This is one of the surefire signs that it is time to replace your roof. Sagging indicates that there are structural issues that need to be addressed. They could’ve been caused by any of the issues above or from some outside influence on the roof.
If the interior of your roof checks out, then there are still a few things to watch out for on the exterior of your roof. Be extra careful as you examine your roof and avoid walking on your roof if the materials are easily damaged, such as tile. Here are a few things to notice, most of which do not require you to step foot on your roof.
Look for Damage – Most of us don’t take notice of our roof until there’s a problem, but if you suspect there could be issues, then secure a ladder and climb up to look for any damage. If you notice cracked tile, cracked shingles or any other visible damage, it might be time to replace the roof.
Look for mold – Mold is not your roof’s best friend, so if you see mold, call us for an inspection.
Check your gutters – If your gutters are backed up, it’s going to cause water to sit on your roof, which is never good. While you’re looking for damage on the roof, it’s also a good time to make sure your gutters are cleared of debris, and that they’re still securely attached. Also, if you have shingles, they shed granules which can usually be seen in your gutter and give you a warning that it might be time to replace your roof.
