Kent Homeowner Lost Hundreds on Bad Roofing Contractor

We think it’s disheartening to see news stories where homeowners lose their hard-earned money on unlicensed roofing contractors. Sadly, all too often we hear of unethical contractors who take money upfront for a roofing job and then either never complete the work or mysteriously go out of business.

Homeowner out of Luck

A recent news story in the Kent Reporter illustrates this point. A man from Quincy, WA, was recently charged with unregistered contracting after a Kent homeowner said he signed a contract to replace a roof and never delivered the promised services. Unfortunately, the homeowner paid $850 for the contractor to purchase roofing materials that never materialized before discovering that the work would never be completed, the article explained.

The homeowner contacted the Kent Police Department and the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, which eventually led to charges against the contractor. However, it remains to be seen whether the homeowner will ever get his or her money back.

What to Look for in a Roofing Contractor

This unfortunate news story is a timely reminder for homeowners to do their due diligence before selecting a roofing contractor. Before you contract with any roofing company, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Make sure the contractor is registered with the state, which ensures that the contractor has liability insurance and is licensed and bonded. You can click here to visit the Department of Labor & Industries website and search for any contractor’s license.
  • Check the contractor’s Better Business Bureau rating and see if any complaints have been filed against the contractor through the BBB.
  • Check one or more customer review sites, such as Angie’s List, to see if customer feedback is positive or negative.
  • Ask the contractor for references.
  • Beware of super low bids. Contractors in financial distress often low-ball their quote to secure a homeowner’s deposit, which they then use to pay past-due bills. If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Never pay in full for a service until the work has been completed. While most reputable roofing companies will ask for a small deposit in advance, reputable roofing companies will not require the full amount until the work is complete.
