The University of Pittsburgh’s Posvar Hall will be the first building on campus to sport special “green” roofing membranes.

Here at Chinook Roofing & Gutters, we love keeping up with the latest innovations in roofing technology. Recently, we saw the green roofing movement push ahead once more with the addition of an innovative roofing material on a university building on the other side of the country.

A Pollution-Eating Roof Product

This fall, the University of Pittsburgh’s Posvar Hall will be outfitted with a new roofing material called Eco-Activ Waterproofing Holder that reportedly “eats pollution,” according to the University Times. The material, manufactured by Siplast, is a membrane covered with mineral granules which essentially break up certain air pollutants, rendering them harmless, the article explained. Here’s a summary of this cool roofing story, according to CBS Pittsburgh:

  • The roofing product is designed to pull nitrogen oxide out of the air. This pollutant results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as vehicle emissions, coal plants, etc.
  • The Eco-Activ roofing treatment works by converting nitrogen oxide from a gas to a solid. The sun’s UV rays are used to activate this process and rain washes away the harmless, nontoxic residue that is left over.
  • The university’s sustainability coordinator believes the new roofing treatment could pull approximately 200 vehicle emissions out of the air.
  • While Eco-Activ is primarily applied to commercial structures right now, it could also be applied to residential homes.

Siplast’s online brochure explains the technology behind Eco-Active roof membranes in greater detail.
