Roofing Trends of the Past and Future

Posted on: February 12, 2015

Dr. Jim Hoff, Research Director for the Center of Environment Innovation in Roofing, has been entrenched in the roofing industry for 30 years and has seen things come and go throughout the years. He took some time over the holidays to look back at his predictions from 1985 and to forecast his ideas for the next 30 years of roofing. We’ll touch on a few of his thoughts and predictions for roofing trends, but click here for the full article.

Single-Ply Roofing

One of Dr. Hoff’s predictions in 1985 was that single-ply roofing was going to take off dramatically in sales and we’ve definitely seen that here at Chinook. Single-ply roofing consists of insulation, a single ply membrane, flashings and adhesive. It’s a great fit if you’re looking for something with a fairly competitive price and easy installation. We’ve witnessed the popularity of singly-ply grow over the past few decades for those reasons in particular.

Commercial Building Codes

With building codes in the United States still being updated and added to each year, Dr. Hoff’s prediction that the adoption and enforcement of such codes would increase was entirely accurate. We offer services to help with Commercial Seal Roof Repair and Maintenance and are constantly on top of any changes to make sure your building is up to code.

The Future of Roofing

Dr. Hoff admits he missed a few key trends, like the changes in roofing adhesives and cool reflective roofs, but he still submitted a few ideas of what may be coming down the line in the next 30 years. Looking toward the future of roofing trends, he predicts a few things:

  • “Removing roofs will be as important as installing roofs.” This will be powered by a demand for recycling and reusing materials
  • “Resilience will drive new levels of roof durability.” We can’t avoid extreme weather conditions, but we can work to make more durable roofs to withstand winds, hail and wildfires.
  • “The ‘Internet of things’ will move to the rooftop.” More so for commercial buildings, he predicts that technology is going to make it easier to integrate rooftop energy into the building.

No matter what trends come to fruition, one thing is for sure; the team here at Chinook will be ready!
